Institutional National Research Service Award (NRSA) Training Grants
Individual National Research Service Award (NRSA) Fellowships
Predoctoral Fellowships
F30 - NINDS Medical Student Dual -Degree MD/PhD Fellowships
Support for NRSA MD/PhD fellowships is designed to help ensure that highly trained clinician-scientists will be available
in adequate numbers to conduct basic and clinical research in disorders relevant to the mission of the NINDS. Applicants are
STRONGLY encouraged to contact NINDS before preparing an application, as NINDS will consider only those applications that are designed
to support the training and development of scientists with interest relevant to the mission of NINDS. Eligible applicants
must be enrolled in an MD program at an accredited medical school, accepted in a related scientific PhD program, and supervised
by a mentor in that scientific discipline when the application is submitted. The typical applicant will apply during the first
or second year of medical school for funding to begin in the subsequent year, but applications may be submitted during later
years as well. However, NINDS adheres strictly to the requirement in the program announcement that, at the time the award
is made, applicants must have a minimum of 1 year of dissertation research remaining in their MD/PhD program.
It is requested that applicants provide a timeline in all F30 submissions of their entire MD/PhD program, and specify when during this timeline medical school curricula and research will be pursued. This timeline should list the actual months and years (i.e., calendar months and years, not just "year 1, year 2, year 3," etc.) of their program, with highlighted reference to the dates within that timeline for which F30 support is requested. A convenient place to put this information would be at the end of item 20, on a continuation page if necessary, on Form Page 3 of the PHS 416-1 application form.
F31 - National Research Service Awards for Individual Predoctoral Fellows
NINDS provides National Research Service Award (NRSA) predoctoral training fellowships (F31) to promising applicants with
the potential to become productive, independent investigators in the scientific mission areas of the Institute. This program
will provide predoctoral training support for doctoral candidates who are within their first 6 years of graduate school, have
or will have successfully completed their comprehensive examinations or the equivalent by the time of award, and will be performing
dissertation research and training. Support will be provided for a maximum of 3 years. The applicant should provide evidence
of potential for a productive research career based upon the quality of previous research training and academic record. The
applicant must propose a dissertation research and training program that falls into a research area within the scientific
mission of the NINDS. The research training experience must enhance the applicant's conceptualization of research problems
and research skills, under the guidance and supervision of a committed mentor who is an active and established investigator
in the area of the applicant's proposed research. The research training program should be carried out in a research environment
that includes appropriate human and technical resources and is demonstrably committed to the research training of the applicant
in the program he/she proposes in the application.
F31 - NIH Predoctoral Fellowship Awards to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research
NINDS provides National Research Service Award (NRSA) training fellowships to outstanding predoctoral candidates from groups
that have been shown to be underrepresented, including underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities,
and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. The intent of this program is to increase the number of scientists from underrepresented
populations in biomedical research. Award recipients will receive up to five years of research training leading to a Ph.D.
or equivalent research degree, a combined M.D./Ph.D. degree, or another formally combined professional and research doctoral
degree in biomedical, behavioral, health services, or clinical sciences. Support is NOT available for individuals enrolled
in medical or other professional schools UNLESS they are enrolled in a combined professional doctorate/PhD degree program
in biomedical or behavioral research. Potential applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Michelle Jones-London in the NINDS Office of Minority Health and Research for additional information.
