Our Vision: The vision of the Habitat Conservation Division, NMFS Southwest Region, is to achieve healthy and self-sustaining riverine, estuarine, and marine habitats that support vital ecosystem functions, services, and fisheries production in and offshore of California. Our Mission: The mission of the Habitat Conservation Division, NMFS Southwest Region, is to conserve, protect, and manage living marine resources and the habitats that sustain them. In collaboration with a diversity of public, private and non-profit partners, NMFS is responsible for stewardship of Californias marine, and anadromous fish resources and their habitats. Among the numerous agencies with interests and responsibilities for marine and anadromous fish in California, NMFS has unique and broad authorities and expertise to carry out a comprehensive approach to restoring fish populations. The Magnuson Stevens Fisheries Conservation and Management Act, the Endangered Species Act, and Federal Power Act, empower NMFS with mandates broad enough to protect and manage important fisheries from headwater spawning gravels to ocean harvest.
