MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Alabama residents and evacuees displaced by Hurricane Katrina may be living in temporary housing in travel trailers provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These housing units must not be moved under any circumstances.

Applicants approved by FEMA have signed leases for the housing units, which are situated on sites that have been carefully researched and selected to ensure the trailers are in suitably-equipped locations. The units must not be moved to any other site.

Individuals and families are informed of all rules and regulations pertaining to FEMA temporary housing, and are asked to sign an occupancy agreement. They are given a copy of the agreement and must certify that they clearly understand the rules.

If occupants need to change or update their delivery address, they should call FEMA as soon as possible to eliminate any delay. They must not take it upon themselves to move the travel trailer.

If a circumstance arises where a travel trailer has already been delivered and needs to be moved to another location, the individual or family should call 251-989-2143 or the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362); TTY 800-462-7585.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
