Early Hearing Detection & Intervention (EHDI) Program |
Each year in the U.S., more
than 12,000 babies are born with a hearing loss. Hearing
loss can go unnoticed for years, and the children affected
can have delays in speech, language, and cognitive
development. This is why all babies need a hearing
screening, preferably right after birth. If a hearing loss
is identified soon after birth, the family and health
professionals can make sure the child gets the services
needed to develop communication and language skills that
will last a lifetime. |

A baby's
hearing can be screened using AABR, OAE, or both. These
tests do not hurt the baby, and should be performed before
the child leaves the hospital.
