Abstract

The mission of Witness Justice is to offer advocacy and support to survivors of violence and trauma. To achieve its mission, the organization provides the following services: The types of programs offered by Witness Justice (WJ) include advocacy, education and outreach, and direct assistance. Our advocacy programs include a recent federal issue briefing, hosted by WJ and the Veterans’ Initiative Center and Research Institute, held on Capitol Hill to address “Family Safety: A Significant Concern for Returning Veterans and Their Families,” a national employment survey released in late 2007 which revealed that a large majority of trauma survivors experience substantial workplace problems in the aftermath of violence, and a call to the nation’s leaders to create a national crime reporting system/protocol in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The education and outreach programs of WJ include the development of three online courses under a technical assistance grant with the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women, co-managing the Department of Health and Human Services’ Center for Mental Health Services’ National Center for Trauma-Informed Care (NCTIC) and launching a trauma education and awareness campaign, offering online virtual trainings (v-training.org) to survivors, service providers, and experts, and offering professional consulting services to further the work in raising awareness about the impact of trauma. WJ also provides direct assistance to survivors of violence and trauma through a healing arts program called BlueSpace (to be launched in 2009), a national prayer group, and our Expert Corps of Volunteers.
