GPS/GIS Workshop
For Teachers and Students

Are you interested in learning how to use Global Position Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to study geography and ocean science?
Would you like to involve your students in field data collection and analysis using both data they collect and data collected by governmental and private agencies such as the NOAA's National Marine Sanctuaries Program and NASA?

If so, we invite you to participate in the Mapping Ocean Sanctuaries teacher-student workshop this summer in Savannah, Georgia. During the workshop, you will explore the biological, physical, and geological characteristics of our coastlines and national marine sanctuaries in order to understand how they differ from each other and why each is so unique!

The workshop will include:

  • hands-on instruction on how to use ArcView GIS software, GPS units, and field data collection equipment, using,
    • Exploring Data with GIS to Experience Sanctuaries (EDGES) curriculum. Materials developed with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA)’s National Marine Sanctuary Program;
    • Mapping Our World curriculum; a set of 20 geography-based GIS lessons for educators developed by ESRI. It includes a a one-year, site license for ArcView GIS software;
  • an on-shore field trip to gather ocean science data with field data collection equipment and GPS units,
  • three SDU/PDU units for all participants and a $100 stipend for teachers from Chatham County School District.


We are seeking dedicated educators who wish to engage their students in discovery-based learning of ocean science and geography with GIS. Limit: 10 teacher-student pairs.

Workshop cost:
$50, includes 3 SDU/PDUs. Lunches provided. Transportation and lodging are the responsibility of the participant.

Sign-ups will be held on-line through Chatham Country School District (http://erol1.eschoolsolutions.com/). Out-of-district applicants should call Chatham School District Staff Development office at (912) 201-5573 to request a PIN number.


Applicants should also submit a workshop application (see attached.)
