Approach
Determine information gaps, develop collaborations to study
issues, and interpret research for decision makers.

Section Contents
Overview
of Research Program
The Research Program assesses change in species and habitats, and
participates in regional research to better understand the Sanctuary
ecosystem.
Research
Personnel
The Research Team consists of a Coordinator,
Specialists, Interns, and a monitoring staff. Learn more about
their backgrounds and research interests. The Research Program also
relies heavily on the work done by graduate students and volunteers.
Research
Activities Panel
The Sanctuary Advisory Councils Research Activities
Panel (RAP) is comprised of over 20 representatives from government agencies,
research organizations, and academic institutions who are concerned with the
resources of the Sanctuary. The RAP advises the Council and the Sanctuary
Superintendent on scientific and research related policies
and provides a link between the community and Sanctuary management.
Technical
Reports
Reports and publications that were either authored by
Sanctuary staff or funded, fully or in part, by the Monterey Bay National
Marine Sanctuary. Additionally, we include reports that are often referred to in Sanctuary Managment.
Natural
Resources
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary features many
diverse biological communities and habitats, including kelp forests,
beaches, and one of the deepest underwater canyons in North America.
An abundance of life, from tiny plankton to huge blue whales, thrives
in these waters.
Submerged Cultural
Resources
The sanctuary is responsible for the protection and management of historical and cultural resources within its boundary. Submerged cultural resources include shipwrecks, aircraft, wharfs and dock sites, prehistoric archaeological sites, and associated artifacts.
Monitoring
Programs
Comprehensive, long-term monitoring is a fundamental
element of resource management and protection. By integrating ongoing research
efforts from over 60 marine research groups and filling
in critical gaps, the Sanctuary can gain a comprehensive understanding
of its resources and processes.
Research
Platforms
A variety of platforms are available for use, including large NOAA ships,
the Sanctuarys own 65-ft research vessel, and other regionally
owned and operated vessels.
Annual
Sanctuary Currents Symposium
The Currents Symposium is an annual event for researchers, educators,
students, and the public to learn about research being conducted
in the Sanctuary. The Symposium helps us to share understanding of
Sanctuary habitats and resources.
