INFORMATION SERVICES

Information Services

The Information Services Division of MAG manages the Geographic Information Systems (GIS), socioeconomic data collection and maintenance, socioeconomic modeling, telecommunications and MAG Information Center (MAGIC) programs. Information Services is responsible for supporting regional decision-making through leading-edge technology, information gathering and analysis. Information Services gathers and provides base information required for many projects in other divisions, for member agencies and for the general public. In addition, Information Services provides telecommunications support to member agencies and internal computer and network support to the MAG staff.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Socioeconomic Data
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a synthesis of a database and a mapping system that allows for the storage, update, analysis and a display of the data in mapping and tabular format. Local base data and Census information are major components of the data collection and GIS efforts. The GIS team at MAG collects, updates, maintains and analyzes geographic information and prepares maps using this information. The team also provides GIS services and support to personnel of MAG, MAG member agencies, the general public and MAGIC clients.

Socioeconomic Modeling
Socioeconomic modeling involves using the data, surveys and assumptions collected by MAG to prepare estimates and projections of population, housing and employment. MAG staff prepares population estimates by municipality; while it develops socioeconomic projections at three levels of geography: Municipal Planning Area (MPA), Regional Analysis Zone (RAZ), and Traffic Analysis Zone (TAZ). The projections generated by MAG provide input to the MAG transportation and air quality models that produce traffic and emissions projections. Both the base data and projections are also used for a wide variety of other regional planning programs.

Telecommunications
Telecommunications offers a valuable technological tool to enhance communication among MAG member agencies and other parties. The use of audioconferencing, videoconferencing and e-mail supplements the face-to-face communication that takes place in the region, while reducing the time and cost associated with travel. The Information Services telecommunications program features two cutting edge programs designed to connect member agencies: the Regional Videoconferencing System (RVS) and the MAG Regional Community Network (RCN) Study.

MAGIC
The Maricopa Association of Governments Information Center (MAGIC) was formed to encourage the efficient utilization of existing data and information, making the specialized information and services more available to member agencies, private sector businesses, individuals and other public sector agencies for requests outside the scope of the MAG annual budget and work program. MAGIC provides a vehicle for conveying the data developed in the socioeconomic data and modeling program, and can provide consulting services to both member agencies and the public.
