Arctic Activities It is estimated that by 2020-2030 the Arctic Ocean will be free of multi-year ice in the summer, increasing opportunities for maritime transportation, tourism, oil and gas exploration. Along with this comes a greater possibility of spills and damage to the environment.
Creating New Habitat As Part of Hazardous Waste Cleanup at Asarco Asarco operated one of the largest North American smelters from 1890 to 1985 in Tacoma, Washington, leaving a legacy of toxic slag along the shoreline. OR&R scientists worked with EPA and Asarco to incorporate habitat into the shoreline cleanup.
NEW Screening Quick Reference Tables (SQuiRTs) This new version vastly expands the number of screening environmental benchmarks.
Query Manager and MARPLOT An introduction to the Query Manager database and MARPLOT mapping applications, which are used extensively in NOAA's Coastal Protection and Restoration Division Watershed Projects.
Sediment Guidelines In order to more easily evaluate sediment contaminated with toxic chemicals, we have established some guidelines to determine ecological risk.
Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet Assessment Project Learn about NOAA's special Suisun Bay project investigating potential impacts from the mothball, Reserve Fleet in Suisun Bay, CA.

Software & Data Sets supporting Assessing Risk to Ecological Resources Pages on our site that provide access to software created by the Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R) to aid first responders, planners, and restoration practitioners.
GIS tool ARD GIS Tools
ARD Tools is a collection of Database and GIS tools that NOAA's Assessment and Restoration Division (ARD) has created to support the protection and restoration of coastal species and habitats. NOAA ARD and project partners can take advantage of these tools to support analysis, mapping and communication of complex spatial contaminant and restoration issues in a Watershed context.
GIS tool ARD GIS Tools (DRAFT)
ARD Tools is a collection of Database and GIS tools that NOAA's Assessment and Restoration Division (ARD) has created to support the protection and restoration of coastal species and habitats. NOAA ARD and project partners can take advantage of these tools to support analysis, mapping and communication of complex spatial contaminant and restoration issues in a Watershed context.
A small section of an ESI map. Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) Maps
ESI maps help oil spill responders and planners to identify vulnerable coastal locations, establish protection priorities, and identify cleanup strategies.
Query Manager and MARPLOT Applications, Data, and Maps
Query Manager allows users to select from a menu of pre-programmed queries that sort and analyze data.

Publications about Assessing Risk to Ecological Resources Pages on our site that provide access to publications containing scientific information, field guides, and other material.
ARD Technical Publications on Our Site
A list of documents (in PDF format), created by the Assessment and Restoration Division (ARD) of OR&R.
Coastal and Estuarine Hazardous Waste Site Reports
NOAA scientists have prepared review documents--the Coastal Hazardous Waste Site Reports.
Index to the Coastal and Estuarine Hazardous Waste Site Reports
Links to the state-specific pages of waste site reports.
PCB Changes in Fish After Remediation of a Hazardous Waste Site
This poster presents results of assessing fish tissue PCB levels after remediation of a small Hudson River site.
Predicting Sediment Toxicity
This report describes the development of 37 individual chemical logistic regression models that quantify relationships between the concentrations of sediment-associated contaminants and toxicity in two species of marine amphipods.
A NOAA seafood tester examines seafood as part of a sensory test. Seafood Safety after an Oil Spill
Publications that describe how to monitor seafood for exposure and contamination after an oil spill.
Sediment Quality Guidelines (ERL/ERM)
The guidelines were initially intended for use by NOAA in ranking areas that warranted further detailed study, and for use in ranking chemicals that might be of potential concern.

Anacostia River Watershed Database & Mapping Project IMS Web Portal
The Anacostia River Watershed Database and Mapping Project was developed to evaluate ecological and human health risks associated with hazardous substances in the lower tidal river, as well as to provide information valuable in planning of restoration projects.
icon for calcasieu navigation. Calcasieu Estuary Watershed Database & Mapping Project Web Portal
Developed to support NOAA's Ocean Service (NOS) activities and the NOS Assessment and Restoration Division (ARD) mission.
Elizabeth River Watershed Conceptual Model Project Web Portal
This project is designed as a decision support tool for coastal managers within the Elizabeth River region.
Portland Harbor Watershed Database & Mapping Project Web Portal
Protection and restoration of coastal watersheds requires the synthesis of complex environmental issues. The evaluation of multiple environmental issues can be significantly improved by combining scientific data and watershed characteristics into a Geographic Information System (GIS).
San Francisco Bay Project Impact Evaluation System Web Portal
This site is designed as a reference and decision support tool for marine project proponents, resource managers, and the public.
San Francisco Bay Subtidal Habitat Mapping Project Web Portal
This San Francisco Bay mapping project is a subset of the larger San Francisco Bay Watershed Database & Mapping Project.
San Francisco Bay Watershed Database and Mapping Project Web Portal
The project is designed as a decision support tool for coastal managers within the San Francisco Bay region.

About the Watershed Database and Mapping Projects NOAA's Assessment and Restoration Division has developed numerous Watershed Database and Mapping Projects that combine a standard database structure, a database application (Query Manager), and GIS data.
Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) Maps ESI maps help oil spill responders and planners to identify vulnerable coastal locations, establish protection priorities, and identify cleanup strategies.
NOAA Restoration Portal Web Site Provides centralized access to information about NOAA restoration resources, including restoration techniques and NOAA restoration references, through a single point-of-entry.
OR&R Efforts in Vieques, Puerto Rico Vieques is a small island east of mainland Puerto Rico that was formerly used by the U.S. Navy for military training operations. The Navy ceased operations in 2003, and is now investigating areas it previously occupied to determine the extent of contamination.
