Hazel D. Dean, ScD, MPH

Deputy Director, National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP)

 

Hazel D. Dean, ScD, MPH, is currently the Deputy Director of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP). As NCHHSTP Deputy Director, Dr. Dean works to oversee all of CDC′s work related to the prevention, control and elimination of HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, STDs, and TB in the United States, as well as CDC′s Global AIDS Program, an implementing partner of the U.S. President′s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

During her 17 years at CDC, Dr. Dean has served as NCHHSTP′s first Associate Director for Health Disparities. Prior to this post, she was Supervisor of the Research and Dissemination Team in the HIV Incidence and Case Surveillance Branch. Dr. Dean was also Chief of CDC′s Applied Surveillance and Epidemiology Unit and a staff epidemiologist. Prior to joining CDC, Dr. Dean worked at the Louisiana State Health Department as an epidemiologist, biostatistician, and statistical coordinator with the HIV/AIDS Program.

Dr. Dean is the author of numerous scientific journal articles, reports, and book chapters on HIV/AIDS, STDs, TB and viral hepatitis among racial and ethnic minorities; women; incarcerated populations; and achieving health equity. Her major research interests include developing methods, applications and programs to detect, understand and reduce health inequalities.

Dr. Dean′s awards and honors include Tulane University′s Champion of Public Health Award, Spelman College′s Alumnae Achievement Award in the Health Sciences and CDC′s Health Equity Award. Dr. Dean received her bachelor′s degree in biology from Spelman College, her master′s degree in public health in international health/biostatistics, and a doctorate of science degree in biostatistics from Tulane University.
