Research interests
My primary research interest is the study of climate mainly using models. I study climate change, the present climate and past climates.
Current research projects
- Analysis of GFDL's coupled model results
Many papers and studies have come out of the CM2.X integrations. A sample includes an assessment of regional climate change over the past 100 years, investiagtion of the thermohaline circulation response to water hosing in the N Atlantic, papers investigating the heat and carbon uptake in the Southern Ocean when Greenhouse gases increase and papers documenting the models. - Development and use of an Earth System Model
GFDL is developing a new model that includes a subcomponent model of the carbon cycle. This new model allows interactions between climate and vegetation on land and plants and animals in the oceans. We have a prototype model running and are in the process of developing 2 new ESMs. We plan to use new ESMs in the CMIP5/AR5 activities and for other science projects. - Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP)
Stouffer has been the CMIP Panel chair since 2006. Karl Taylor (PCMDI) and Ron Stouffer have lead an effort to develop the experimental design for CMIP5. See the CMIP5 web pages at PCMDI for more information.
