Swimming and other water-related activities are fun, active, and healthy ways to spend leisure time and help everyone get the physical activity needed for a healthy life. Millions of people enjoy the water every year so it pays to keep in mind the potential health consequences of using the water. We continue to see people engaging in activities that result in drowning. The past two decades have also shown an increase in the number of recreational water illness (RWI) outbreaks associated with being at the pool or lake. People still come home from the beach or pool with injuries or severe sunburns that increase the risk of skin cancer. Learning how to reduce these risks before you go the beach, lake, pool or spa can make a big difference in the quality of your leisure time and life. Are you a pool operator or beach manager wanting to ensure that your swimmers stay healthy? Are you a public health official looking for guidance in preventing water-related problems in your community? CDC's Healthy Swimming program can help you find the latest information and resources to help you make everyone’s time around the water a healthy and fun experience.
