Updating the CRW Database Without Deleting Your Custom Chemicals

Follow this procedure carefully to avoid loss of custom chemical information that you've entered into the Chemical Reactivity Worksheet (CRW).

Note: In order to prevent database file corruption, it is important that your computer not be disturbed or interrupted during the update process. If your computer is a laptop, make sure its power supply is connected and functioning normally. For any computer, make sure that there is ample free space on the hard drive (ideally, 10-20% of the hard drive capacity).

  1. It is a good idea to zip up a copy of your existing CRW file and keep it as a backup.
  2. Download and uncompress the update file, which includes three files: ChemicalLibraryUpdate.fp7, ChemicalNamesUpdate.fp7, and ReactivityNamesUpdate.fp7.
  3. Place those three files in the folder than contains your existing CRW2.exe file.
  4. Start the CRW.
  5. On the opening screen, select Update Database from the Scripts menu. (To return to the opening screen, select About CRW from the Help menu.)
  6. An alert will appear, reminding you to make sure that you've downloaded the update files and placed them in the proper folder. Click OK to begin the update process.

Once the CRW has completed running the update process, you'll have a new version of the chemical database. Additionally, all of your custom chemicals and saved mixtures will still be retained in the CRW.

If Something Goes Wrong with the Update Process

The easiest way to fix the situation is to remove the folder with the CRW program files, and unzip your backup copy and start the process again. If you didn't make a backup copy, you can use the procedure below to go back to your old version.

  1. Delete the three partially updated files from the folder containing the CRW2.exe file: ChemicalLibrary.crw, ChemicalNames.crw, ReactivityNames.crw.
  2. During the update process, three backup files were generated and placed in the same folder as the CRW2.exe file: ChemicalLibraryBackup.fp7, ChemicalNamesBackup.fp7, ReactivityNamesBackup.fp7. Rename these files to:
    • ChemicalLibrary.crw
    • ChemicalNames.crw
    • ReactivityNames.crw
