Publication Excerpt

This manual is for the Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) and Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) who, following their Peace Corps service, choose to pursue a job that keeps them involved in the international world. It provides a basic introduction to jump-start the exploration of internationally-related careers.

Because of the diverse interest of PCVs and RPCVs, this manual contains snapshots of information on the major international career fields, but is not comprehensive. This guide is designed as a reference tool for an international job search. It provides an overview of seven major international fields in both the public and private sectors, basic information on general qualifications, and extensive appendices to supplement your job and/or career search journey. We included addresses and references for some organizations and publications that may be of interest. However, the strength of this guide lies in its bibliography that contains a wealth of resources to satisfy most international job interests.

It is not possible to compile in a single manual all the information that every RPCV could want for an international job search. We didn't try. Plan to use the general information as a starting point to generate ideas and formulate job search strategies. Then find a comfortable chair at your local library, locate the references relevant to your interests and dive in!

If you are currently a PCV, you may want to see what publications and resources are available at your Peace Corps Information Resource Center (IRC), your local embassy, AID Mission and/or International Chamber of Commerce. NGOs and other local agencies that function in your country may also have libraries and resources that you can access.
