An Introduction to Systems Thinking and Policy Modeling for Coastal Management Practitioners
Don Robadue, Coastal Resources Center, University of Rhode Island

Date and Time: Sunday, July 19, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $50.00
Participants: Minimum 6, Maximum 24
Lunch: On your own from noon to 1:00 p.m.

System dynamics helps reveal the hidden factors at work when decisions and plans lead to actions that seem to make matters worse, not better. Participants will describe properties of systems from a coastal management perspective and articulate examples of system behaviors that interfere and undermine, as well as aid and support, decision-making and implementation. Concepts of positive and negative feedback as well as systems archetypes are introduced through individual and group modeling exercises, drawing out dynamic stories on challenges they presently face. Good practices for insightful diagramming are emphasized. Participants can transfer a causal loop diagram to Vensim PLE, the free version of a powerful modeling software package. Participants from the Coastal Zone 07 event are welcome, since many lecturettes are new. Laptops encouraged but not required.

Talking About a Sea Change: Ecosystem-Based Management Communication Training
Alex Danoff and Kathleen Reaugh, SeaWeb

Date and Time: Sunday, July 19, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Cost: $25.00
Participants: Minimum 12, Maximum 30

Successfully communicating the purpose, principles, benefits, and requisite changes of ecosystem-based management is key to overcoming the challenges of explaining and promoting this ocean management framework. This training session will tackle how to effectively communicate the concepts and science needed to inspire stakeholders to embrace an ecosystem-based approach to ocean management. Led by a team of researchers and communications professionals, the training will focus on grounding the abstract concepts and discussions of ecosystem-based management in the reality of what people care about, what is convincing, and what is needed to inspire action and change policy.

Using CanVis for Visualization
Hansje Gold-Krueck, The Baldwin Group at NOAA Coastal Services Center

Date and Time: Sunday, July 19, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $25.00
Participants: Minimum 5, Maximum 20

The ability to create visualizations can be a valuable skill for coastal managers to help them communicate ideas, brainstorm concepts, and evaluate alternatives. Using visualization in these ways has often been a challenge because of limitations in funds and expertise. The three-hour CanVis workshop will provide participants with a hands-on introduction to the free CanVis software. The software is easy to learn. By the conclusion of the workshop all participants will, regardless of their level of computer skill, be able to independently create basic visualizations using their own images. Participants will also learn about basic visualization concepts, applications to participants’ projects, and other potential uses of visualization through case studies of past projects. Participants will be required to provide their own laptops and preload the CanVis software and select files prior to the workshop. Information on obtaining the software and files from the ftp site will be sent to participants prior to the workshop.

Collaborative Learning for Ecosystem Management: A Short Course
Christine Feurt, Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve

Date and Time: Sunday, July 19, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $25.00
Participants: Minimum 8, Maximum 24

Collaborative learning is used to create interdisciplinary and multistakeholder teams to accomplish the objectives of ecosystem-based management. This training provides an introduction to the techniques and skills required to conduct collaborative learning processes. The training includes an overview of the principles and practices of adult learning, conflict resolution, and management of complex systems that are the foundation of collaborative learning. Coastal managers, scientists, and policy makers will learn how to conduct stakeholder assessments and design, implement, and evaluate a collaborative learning process. The training will be skills-based, drawing from participant experience and challenges associated with implementing an ecosystem approach to management.
