2008 NOAA General Counsel Awards (PDF)
Each year, the NOAA Office of the General Counsel recognizes attorneys, support staff, line and staff office personnel, and other Federal Agency employees for their exceptional performance and contribution to the NOAA Office of the General Counsel. GSD congratulates Bill Bendel, a co-recipient of this award for his contributions to the Ocean Hall Team. Bill led the successful installation of NOAA's Science On a Sphere®, the showpiece and heart of the Ocean Hall exhibit at the Smithsonian Sant Ocean Systems Gallery (http://ocean.si.edu/ocean_hall/Galleries/global_ocean_systems.html).10 Feb 09
Federal 100 Winner
Congratulations are in order for Eric Hackathorn of ESRL's GSD, one of Federal Computer Week's 2008 "Federal 100." Eric has been instrumental in developing NOAA's presence in the online world "Second Life." Virtual worlds allow their users to project a nonphysical representation of themselves – an avatar – into a generated three-dimensional Web presence, and interact with other participants. Eric also is recognized for his lead in building collaborations between other federal and intergovernmental agencies in the virtual worlds arena.Dec 08
Steve Albers receives the R. R. Newton Award for Scientific History
Steve Albers proposed the fruitful idea of consulting historical satellite-search ms records of then-known planets when near geocentric conjunction with then-unknown planets, to find unwitting observations of the latter — an idea that led to Charles Kowal's world-famous 1980 find of Galileo's 1613 Neptune sightings.26 Sep 08

OAR Outstanding Scientific Paper Awards 2008
This year, two papers co-authored by members of ESRL's Global Systems Division (GSD) were among those selected for the NOAA OAR Outstanding Scientific Paper Award. GSD joins Dr. Rick Spinrad, Assistant Administrator, OAR, in congratulating co-authors Tracy Lorraine Smith, Stanley G. Benjamin, Seth I. Gutman, and Susan Sahm on this significant achievement. Additionally, GSD congratulates Seth Gutman and coauthors on another OAR Outstanding Scientific Paper of 2008.23 Jul 08
Technology Transfer Award
A four-member team from GSD, which includes John A. McGinley, John R. Smart, Linda S. Wharton, and Daniel L. Birkenheuer, has been selected as the recipient of the 2008 NOAA Technology Transfer Award in recognition of the LAPS technology transfer to support development and implementation of the Precision Airdrop System that improves airdrop activities worldwide.15 Jul 08
NOAA Research Receives Virtual Learning Prize
The New Media Consortium (NMC) honors Eric Hackathorn of NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory with one of the 2008 Virtual Learning Prizes for his "Exploring Weather and Climate Change Through a Climate Time Line," a proposal that will be developed by NMC for NOAA's Second Life virtual world.23 May 08
2008 CIRA Research Initiative Award Winners
Information and Technology Services/Data Systems Group's Paul Hamer and Aviation Branch/Advanced Computing Section's Jeff Smith have been named two winners of CIRA's 2008 Research Initiative Award.17 Oct 07
2007 OAR Outstanding Scientific Paper Award GSD's Seth Gutman is a co-author on one of the 2007 OAR Outstanding Scientific Papers. New ESRL/GSD-managed Computer Room Recognized by Silver Hard Hat Award
The new computing facility housing a NOAA supercomputer and managed by ESRL's Global Systems Division in Boulder, CO has been named "Outstanding Mechanical/Electrical Project" by Colorado Construction magazine.20 Jul 07
Jebb Stewart receives the 2007 CIRA Research Initiative Award
The award is in recognition of Jebb's technical leadership in the system design and development of enabling technology for the Gridded FX-Net System.26 Apr 07

GSD's FX-Net Team Receives Fire Weather Honor Award
At the National Predictive Services Annual Meeting, the FX-Net Team received an Honor Award from the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service's Predictive Services Program.14 Oct 05
NASA Award for ESRL/GSD's TAMDAR Team
GSD's TAMDAR team received an award for "outstanding contributions to aviation weather safety research and development" at the recent NASA Aviation Weather Accident Prevention Project Review.24 May 05
John Brown Honored with NASA Group Achievement Award
Dr. John Brown, along with colleagues from several NASA laboratories, served on a board to investigate the crash of Helios, a solar-powered "flying wing" Remotely Piloted Aircraft that suffered structural failure and fell into the Pacific Ocean during a long-duration test flight on June 26, 2003.11 May 05
Technology Transfer Award
A nine-member team from FSL has been selected as the recipient of the 2005 NOAA Technology Transfer Award for its work on the design, development, integration, testing, and implementation of the RSA (Range Standardization and Automation) Weather System, now running at the Eastern and Western Ranges.6 May 05
NOAA Administrator's Award
Leslie Hart, HPCS management team lead, and Scott Nahman, logistics management specialist, are part of a group selected to receive a 2005 NOAA Administrator's Award for their "extraordinary efforts, dedication, and teamwork to develop and issue integrated requirements for a NOAA high performance computer system that realistically demonstrates our One-NOAA vision."30 Apr 05

Award to NOAA/Boulder Networking Group
The Department of Commerce Bronze Medal award proposed for the primary members of the NOAA/Boulder Networking Group responsible for the David Skaggs Research Center building network has been approved. Three members of that group are Bob Clark and Brian Moore of FSL and Jerry Janssen, formerly of FSL. Everyone will receive an individual medal. Congratulations to FSL's Web Awards Winners
At the FSL all-hands meeting on September 9, 1999, the first ever FSL Web Awards winners were announced. The categories and winners in each category were: Most Improved: Demonstration Division Homepage; Best Appearance: The International Division Homepage; Best Product: The ADDS page; Best Electronic Presentation: Satellite Page; Best Internal Use: FICS Product Monitor (restricted to FSL). AWIPS Awards
FSL director Dr. Sandy MacDonald reported that AWIPS has won its category, "Environment, Energy, and Agriculture," in the recent Computerworld Smithsonian Institution Awards for best and most innovative technology. The accompanying write up notes that FSL and D2D were significant factors in the award. OAR Awards to FSL Colleagues
The Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research in NOAA has announced the OAR Bronze Medal Awards. Among the recipients was a team from FSL responsible for development of the Rapid Update Cycle, Version 2 (RUC-2), an hourly analysis and prediction system, and its implementation into operations at NCEP. The RUC-2 is superior to the previous version in several aspects: frequency of assimilation (hourly instead of three-hourly), spatial resolution (40 km and 40 levels in the vertical instead of 60 km and 25 levels), sophistication of model physics, and overall performance.The government employees receiving this award are Stan Benjamin, John Brown, Barry Schwartz, and Tom Schlatter from FSL and Lauren Morone and Geoff DiMego from NCEP. Equal contributions to the RUC-2 development and implementation were made by their colleagues, working through NOAA Cooperative Institutes: Kevin Brundage (CIRA), Tracy Lorraine Smith (CIRA), and Tanya Smirnova (CIRES). They deserve equal credit for this award. Congratulations to everyone.

Bronze Medal Winner
Congratulations to John Snook and FSL. John was one of about 12 people who received a Bronze Medal for the NWS support of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. John was the only FSL person to be included among the award winners. This award is a tribute to both John and all in FSL who contributed to this effort.
