Special Units

The San Francisco bike patrol rounds out the team. Collateral Duties

A wide variety of interesting and rewarding career opportunities are available to you as a United States Mint Police Officer, including various travel opportunities.  Duties in the areas of Bike Patrol, Special Response Team, Instructional Training, Firearms, and other units exist for those who desire to enhance their career.  Additionally, after two years with the U.S. Mint Police, you may compete in the promotional process when vacancies occur.

Bike Patrol:  Officers selected for this duty are required to be highly motivated, in excellent physical condition, and must attend and graduate from the two-week bicycle patrol training program offered at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA.  The U.S. Mint Police rely on its bike patrol for several different functions.  The bike patrol enhances the U.S. Mint Police visibility, in addition to serving as an integral component of community policing.  Officers strive to forge relationships with area businesses and local vendors.  These relationships help produce information regarding the areas around each Mint — that is shared with other agencies — to help combat certain crimes and help plan for special events.  In a downtown setting, bike patrol offers a quick and effective way to move around the city.  This mobility affords our officers the opportunity to assist local police departments if needed, respond to calls for service, and maintain a high police presence around each facility.

Special Response Team (SRT):  Special Response Team Each of the U.S. Mint Special Response Teams is comprised of officers chosen from their respective facilities.  Officers selected for the SRT must be highly motivated, in excellent physical condition, and successfully complete a battery of tests before being selected for the assignment.  After selection, officers are required to successfully complete a certified Special Weapons and Tactics training program.  Special Response Teams train on a regular and recurring basis at each of the field facilities.  The teams regularly train with other law enforcement agencies.  Additionally, Special Response Teams are mobilized to different facilities for special events that occur.  Most recently, SRT teams from Fort Knox flew to Philadelphia, PA for the Republican National Convention and to Washington, D.C., for the inauguration in January of 2001.

Instructional Training

Firearms Instructor:  The U.S. Mint Police Firearms Instructors are responsible for teaching the principles and techniques involved in the many different facets of firearms.  The U.S. Mint Police utilize a wide array of weapon systems in order to accomplish its mission.  These instructors ensure all U.S. Mint Police officers are proficient and qualify with issued duty weapons.

Firearms Instructors in each of the U.S. Mint facilities receive their initial firearms training during a two week course of instruction administered by the FLETC.  In addition to this training, Firearms Instructors routinely attend advance training classes.

The U.S. Mint Police rely on indoor and outdoor ranges as well as both static and dynamic courses of fire in order to offer the most realistic training possible.  Instructors emphasize weapon safety, the use of cover and concealment, officer safety and survival, and fundamental reloading drill.  Each of these skills insure officer proficiency in the area of firearms.

Field Training Officer:  The U.S. Mint Police Field Training Officers are generally the most knowledgeable officers regarding U.S. Mint and U.S. Mint Police Policies and Procedures.  The FTO program helps new officers acclimate to their new police environments.

New hires are required to attend and graduate from a rigorous 10-week police training program administered by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA.  Upon successful completion of that program, officers report to their duty station for an additional 5 weeks of training.  Field Training Officers instruct new hires on:

  • U.S. Mint Policy and Procedures
  • Jurisdiction
  • Officer Safety
  • Report Writing
  • Effective Radio and Interpersonal Communication
  • The U.S. Mint computer network

Field Training Officers are also involved in instructing new hires on applicable federal, state, and local laws that will be utilized within their respective jurisdictions.  The U.S. Mint Police across the nation work closely with the local police departments to effect arrests, share intelligence, and provide support.  Training officers provide new hires with the information needed to successfully navigate the local and federal court systems and to interact successfully with other local and federal law enforcement agencies.
