About the Library

The Betty Petersen Memorial Library is a full-service branch library of the NOAA Central Library. The library serves the NOAA Science Center in Camp Springs, Maryland.

History and Mission: Betty Petersen Memorial Library began as a reading room in the NOAA Science Center. The Reading Room was founded as a labor of love by Betty Petersen, librarian and wife of Dr. Ralph Petersen of NCEP/EMC, to provide information to scientists and researchers in the building. Betty Petersen managed the NOAA Science Center Reading Room from 1989 to 1994, when she transferred to the NOAA Central Library to serve as hydrometeorological research librarian. Betty Petersen passed away in 1997, and the reading room was renamed in her honor. Since then, the reading room became a full-fledged library under the management of the NOAA Central Library in 2002.

The library serves National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) staff from the National Weather Service (NWS) National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and the National Environmental, Satellite, and Information Services (NESDIS) Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution (OSDPD) and Center for Satellite Applications < Research (STAR) at the NOAA Science Center in Camp Springs, Maryland.
