The GSD Daily Weather Briefing
For all those people who would like an overview of the current weather patterns locally and across the nation, plus a forecast for the rest of the day to a few days out, the Global Systems Division (GSD) of NOAA's ESRL has a 30-minute weather briefing daily, starting at 11:00am, in Room 3C405 (GSD Forecast Center) of the David Skaggs Research Center. The weather briefings were started as part of GSD's Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) workstation development efforts for the National Weather Service, and before that, the workstation development efforts of the former Forecast Systems Laboratory (FSL) and Program for Regional Observing and Forecasting Services (PROFS). In addition to an interesting overview of the weather for attendees, the briefing's purpose is twofold:
- testing new hardware, software, data displays, features, algorithms, and models in a quasi-operational setting; and
- giving research scientists and developers experience and expertise in quasi-operational forecasting and in the use of the latest AWIPS workstations.
The analysis and discussion are orchestrated by a lead briefer, with support from a workstation operator (driver). Briefers and drivers come mainly from the staff at GSD, but also from other groups within the NOAA Labs at the DSRC. We welcome new briefers and drivers.
