Effects on Pregnant Women

! What You Need to Know
if you are pregnant
Frequently Asked Questions

Natural disasters like hurricanes can be devastating for anyone affected, but pregnant women often have special concerns, such as:
  • Infections can affect a pregnant woman more severely than those who are not pregnant or she might be more susceptible to getting an infection. Click here to read more about infections

  • Certain medications used to treat infections and other illnesses might not be recommended for use during pregnancy.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding and have questions about the effects of exposures related to hurricanes, please talk with a health care professional.

Women and health care professionals who need additional information about the effects of exposures related to hurricanes on pregnancy or breastfeeding can call the Organization of Teratology Information Specialists at 1-866-626-OTIS or 1-866-626-6847 between the hours of 8 AM and 6:00 PM Central Time.

The information on this website was put together to assist pregnant women and their health care providers with answering some of their questions related to these issues.
