Headliner Volume 228
March 21, 2008
For the past several years, IRS has reduced the number of business tax form mailings in order to save costs and resources. Prior efforts to eliminate mailings of packages included those who used RAF (Reporting Agent Forum) agents, those who filed electronically, and those who used a preparer.
Last year the IRS began coding all business returns that have identifying numbers whether a taxpayer has used an IRS tax package or not. Based on 941 pre-testing, approximately 5.5 million 941 packages were mailed for the fourth quarter of 2007, but only 1.5 million were used. Therefore, only 1.5 million 941 packages (mailed to last year’s recorded users) will be sent out in the first quarter of 2008.
Practitioners are advised to remind their business clients that all IRS forms can be downloaded from IRS.gov.
