On March 18, 2009, CDC Partnerships hosted the first Business Grantee Forum. The event was a success, with over 80 participants and senior leaders in attendance. Bill Nichols, MPA, interim deputy director for management and budget and acting chief operating officer, expressed in his opening remarks how important the business grantees are in furthering CDC's public health work.
As the majority of adult Americans work, promoting public health in the workplace can impact a broad range and large number of employees. The work of CDC's three business grantees—National Business Coalition on Health, National Business Group on Health and National Safety Council—has helped build bridges between public health, employers, the workplace and community. These grantees continue to build a business case for the link between health and employee performance in the workplace.
During the forum, the grantees presented information on how they are specifically promoting public health, preventing disease and reducing injury. They were joined by CDC staff who discussed examples of their work with business partners to demonstrate the collective power of private and public partnerships.
Natasha Singh, a partner liaison within the Office of Planning, Policy and Evaluation, NCBDDD, said, "This forum was really useful to learn about the value of cross-cutting cooperative agreements. The linkages that CDC staff presented showed me how we could also benefit from collaborating with grantees like these who have such a broad reach to diverse populations."
Following the forum, the business grantees met with CDC senior leaders and contributors to discuss the grantees' work and future collaborations. The smaller meetings allowed for a fruitful exchange of ideas and gave the grantees an opportunity to speak in-depth about their funded projects.
