Core Collection


      The collection is diverse in nature, yet still maintains its focus on mine safety and health. The library was created to provide comprehensive and integrated information services on mine safety and health. Collection development focuses on these materials.

The library has extensive general holdings on subjects related to mine health and safety, including 50,000 books, 150 current periodicals and newspapers, 750 16mm films, 800 videotapes, and 254 tape/slide programs and 568 slide shows on a wide variety of mining related topics.

Special collection areas include:

Reference Collection
    Up-to-date materials on subjects such as mining, engineering, geology, health, safety, law, and computer systems. We also have access to electronic reference sources.
Maps and Charts
    Topographical and mining-related maps and charts from the United States and other countries.
Historical Photographs
    The Bureau of Mines collection of mining photographs dating back to 1910 are available in electronic format and may be viewed through the library electronic catalog.
Audiovisual collection
    Videotapes, films, CDs, slide/tape programs, and other materials on mine health and safety.
Historical Mining Artifacts
    Selections from our holdings of mining equipment and paraphernalia are displayed throughout the Academy.
