Protecting Federal Tax Information: A Message From The IRS
This brief video provides basic information on the law and procedures in place to safeguard federal tax information from disclosure. It is designed for employees of federal, state and local agencies, and contractors that receive federal tax information under the provisions of IRC 6103. It describes the penalties for unauthorized disclosure and identifies resources available to learn more.
The mission of the Office of Governmental Liaison and Disclosure is to improve tax administration by efficiently partnering with other government agencies and by effectively administering the Disclosure statutes.
Fed/State Information Sharing
The IRS Fed/State Program saves government resources by partnering with state government agencies to enhance voluntary compliance with tax laws.

Governmental Liaisons may be contacted with questions dealing ONLY with partnering initiatives between the IRS and federal, state, and local governments.
The IRS Freedom of Information Program website contains information on contacting local IRS Disclosure Offices.
The Safeguards program and staff are responsible for ensuring that federal, state and local agencies receiving federal tax information protect it as if the information remained in IRS’s hands.
