Maine Anemometer Loan Program

Maine Anemometer Loan Program

Location: ME

Contact: Shirley Bartlett, Efficiency Maine Program Manager

Maine expects to launch a new program to loan out devices that will measure wind speed, known as anemometers, during October 2007. Funded by a U.S. Department of Energy grant, the Maine State Energy Program has signed an agreement with the University of Maine at Orono (UMO) to manage the program, and anemometer loan applications are being developed. The state plans to purchase two anemometers with 50 to 70 meter masts; the university will house them, take them to selected sites, set them up, collect data, and write reports. The program will target potential non-residential wind installations, with a preference for sites that have broader applications, like communities, schools, etc., or to gather information about specific promising areas whose wind potential has not been well characterized. UMO plans to use a two-step screening process, first screening applicants using available tools (known wind data, regional wind maps, and geographic features), followed by a site visit.
