The United States Institute of Peace is an independent, nonpartisan institution established and funded by Congress. Its goals are to help prevent and resolve violent international conflicts, promote post-conflict stability and development, and increase conflict management capacity, tools, and intellectual capital worldwide. The Institute does this by empowering others with knowledge, skills, and resources, as well as by directly engaging in peacebuilding efforts around the globe. Commission Chair William Perry and Vice-Chair James Schlesinger on Wed., May 6 will present to the White House and Congress the Commission’s final report on the nation’s long-term strategic posture regarding military capabilities, arms control initiatives, and nuclear nonproliferation. USIP is facilitating the Commission’s review of these critical areas and issue recommendations. Perry and Schlesinger will testify before the House and Senate Armed Services committees on the Commission’s findings. The United States Institute of Peace mourns the loss of Jack Kemp, former member of Congress, who died Saturday evening due to cancer. Congressman Kemp served on the Genocide Prevention Task Force, which was jointly convened by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the American Academy of Diplomacy and the United States Institute of Peace. Iraq war widows.Iraqi Women Struggle Amid Recent Attacks

A string of suicide bombings over the last week has renewed fears of a return to widespread violence. While attacks in Iraq have dropped dramatically since 2007, this ongoing instability has significantly changed the lives of Iraqi civilians, women in particular. With a large number of women widowed, unemployed, and struggling to provide for their families, they now face the daunting challenge of trying to survive in a post-war Iraq.
