Good News about Breast Cancer
Recent Decline in Breast Cancer Incidence Rates in the United States — 1999– 2003

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in the United States,
but there is some good news about breast cancer rates, especially for older women.
According to a recent CDC report on breast cancer, the number of new cases has gone
down. The rate of breast cancer diagnosis has dropped most among women over fifty.

Researchers believe this might be related to fewer women who are taking hormone
replacement therapy after menopause, but there may be other reasons, as well. CDC
will continue to track breast cancer to improve earlier diagnosis and identify other steps
that can reduce the risk of breast cancer.
