Look for all types of training opportunities.

GPO offers several opportunities, including:

  • Interagency Depository Seminar, held annually for 5 days in Washington, DC.
  • Depository Library Council meetings, held twice a year. Fall meetings take place in the Washington, DC metro area; spring meetings are located in other parts of the U.S.
  • Federal Depository Library Conference, combined with the fall Depository Library Council meeting. Held annually in the Washington, DC metro area.

Preliminary agendas for these meetings are announced on the FDLP Desktop. The Interagency Depository Seminar is ideal for depository staff new to U.S. Government information resources and Federal agency information dissemination practices. Orientation sessions for new depository staff are held at both Council meetings, providing opportunities for networking and having basic questions answered. Conference proceedings are available in the FDLP Desktop’s File Repository.

GPO also encourages you to participate in Online Learning that is available for Federal Depository Library participants via OPAL (Online Programming for All Libraries), an interactive Web-based meeting and conferencing service. Topics may include FDLP products and services and all aspects of depository library operations and management.

Contact your regional librarian to determine if there is an orientation session offered to new depository personnel within the state or region. Also, determine if a local, state, or regional library group or association offers any training activities, on a formal or informal basis.

GPO is currently developing an updated Self-Study of a Federal Depository Library, a self-assessment resource. The first module in this resource is entitled “Basics” and is oriented to new depository library personnel. It will provide more detail than this document in many areas. The Self-Study, when available, will be in the FDLP Tutorials section.
