US Marshals SOFAST Task Force Captures Huber Heights Fugitive

James M. Wahlrab, United States Marshal for the Southern District of Ohio and Huber Heights Chief of Police Robert Schommer, announce the arrest of Joseph DAVIS.  DAVIS was wanted by the Huber Heights Police Department for Felonious Assault with a Deadly Weapon.  On January 20th, DAVIS is alleged to have been involved in an altercation with his ex-girlfriend.  During the altercation, DAVIS is alleged to have viciously stabbed the woman.  After the near deadly assault, DAVIS fled the area before police could apprehend him.  Based on the initial investigation conducted by Huber Heights detectives, DAVIS was believed to have fled Ohio.

The Huber Heights Police Department contacted the United States Marshals Service and requested assistance in locating and capturing DAVIS. Due to the viciousness of the crime, the U.S. Marshals made locating and arresting him a high priority. The case was assigned to the fugitive hunting, multi-agency task force known as the Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (SOFAST), which is led by the U.S. Marshals Service.

The SOFAST team quickly confirmed that DAVIS had fled Ohio and had returned to his home state of New York.  The U.S. Marshal led New York/New Jersey Regional Task Force was contacted and briefed on addresses SOFAST believed DAVIS might be hiding.  Early this morning, the hard work put in by the Huber Heights Police Department, the Dayton SOFAST team and the U.S. Marshals New York Task Force paid off when New York Marshals located DAVIS sleeping on the couch at a relative’s house in Woodhaven, New York.  DAVIS was taken in to custody without incident and transported to the Manhattan House Detention Center where he will await extradition back to Ohio.

U.S. Marshal James Wahlrab stated, “This arrest highlights why it is critical for federal, state, and local law enforcement to team together to investigate and locate such dangerous fugitives. Criminals do not recognize jurisdictional boundaries that often limit our partnering agencies. Through tremendous collaboration and the efforts of our task force officers, we were able to utilize all of the necessary resources across the nation to apprehend this suspect”.

The U.S. Marshals Service was America’s first federal law enforcement agency and each year arrests more fugitives than all other federal law enforcement agencies combined.

SOFAST in the Miami Valley area is comprised of the following federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies: United States Marshals Service, U.S. Attorney’s office, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Department of Agriculture, OIG, Ohio Adult Parole Authority, Clark County Sheriffs Office, Darke County Sheriffs Office, Preble County Sheriffs Office, Dayton Police Department, German Township Police Department, Germantown Police Department, Greenville Police Department, Miamisburg Police Department, Moraine Police Department, New Lebanon Police Department, Perry Township Police Department, Springfield Police Department, and the Trotwood Police Department.
