AUSTIN, Texas -- Tropical Storm Chris prompted "hurricane watch" announcements in the Caribbean and heightened interest in the weather among disaster-weary Gulf Coast residents.

When local officials announce a "Hurricane Watch," it means there is a threat of hurricane conditions within 24 to 36 hours. Individuals along the Texas Gulf coast should be ready to go once an evacuation order is announced. The Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends that residents and visitors take action to be ready:

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
