Monday is Deadline to Register for Indiana Disaster Assistance

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Only three days remain for Indiana residents affected by recent severe storms and flooding to register for federal disaster assistance. Monday, Nov. 24, is the deadline to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
"There's still time to register," said Regis Phelan, FEMA's head of Indiana recovery operations. "If you suffered damage, put registering with FEMA for disaster assistance at the top of your weekend to-do list."
To register, residents can go online at any time to www.fema.gov. Or they can call FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), or at TTY 1-800-462-7585 for those with speech or hearing impairments. Lines are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until further notice. Residents can also check on the status of applications and update contact information through the same numbers.
FEMA Individual Assistance can include grants to help pay for temporary housing, home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses such as medical care and damage to personal property. Residents in 30 Indiana counties are eligible for Individual Assistance programs related to the severe storms and flooding from Sept. 12 through Oct. 6. Those counties are Clark, Crawford, Dearborn, Floyd, Franklin, Gibson, Harrison, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Jennings, Knox, Lake, LaPorte, Lawrence, Martin, Ohio, Orange, Perry, Pike, Porter, Posey, Ripley, Scott, Spencer, St. Joseph, Switzerland, Vanderburgh, Warrick and Washington.
In addition to FEMA assistance, low-interest disaster loans are available from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for homeowners, renters, businesses and certain non-profit organizations. Residents who receive an SBA disaster loan application in the mail after applying with FEMA should be sure to complete the application, even if they aren't sure they want a loan. Completing the SBA application is an important step in being considered for FEMA's Other Needs Assistance program, which covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.
Over $49 million in federal disaster assistance grants and loans have been approved so far by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for Indiana residents who were affected by the Sept. 12 through Oct. 6 storms and flooding.
To date, 24,860 homeowners and renters from the 30 designated counties have applied for disaster assistance.
- $49,039,599 in grants and loans have been approved for Indiana applicants, which includes:
- $24,697,806 in housing assistance to cover temporary rental assistance, home repairs and replacement.
- $4,789,593 in other needs assistance to cover essential personal property losses, medical, dental, funeral, transportation or other serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance.
- 33,075 residents have visited Disaster Recovery Centers.
- $19,552,200 in U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster loans has been approved.
- 14,498 SBA disaster loan applications have been issued to homeowners and 2,116 to business owners.
- Currently, 29 FEMA inspectors are verifying disaster damage; 19,347 home inspections have been completed.
FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
