Phoenix, AZ -- One week after the disaster declaration, the first checks have been sent to residents of La Paz and Maricopa counties who applied for federal and state disaster assistance following the October storms, disaster recovery officials said today.

Twenty-six checks totaling $70,303 have been issued for temporary housing repair and rental assistance.

Since October 27, when President Clinton declared La Paz and Maricopa counties major disaster areas, 167 individuals and businesses have registered for disaster aid. So far, 29 storm victims have been found eligible to receive temporary housing assistance. Temporary housing assistance is just one of a number of programs in place to help people to begin to recover from the devastation.

If you sustained damage to your primary residence or business as a result of the severe storms and flooding, you may still register for disaster assistance by calling FEMA's toll free registration line at 1-800-462-9029 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The registration number for persons who are hearing or speech impaired is TTY 1-800-462-7585.
