ALEXANDRIA, La. -- Natchitoches Parish has been added to the list of those eligible for the disaster Public Assistance Program from the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) according to an announcement by FEMA and the Louisiana Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP).

Earlier Public Assistance for Beauregard, Calcasieu, Caldwell, Catahoula, Evangeline, Franklin, Grant, Jefferson Davis, LaSalle, Madison, Morehouse, Richland, Sabine, St. Helena, Vernon and Winn parishes was made available to the state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms and flooding from the effects of severe storms and flooding which began Oct. 16, 2006.

This funding covers reimbursement costs for emergency debris removal and emergency protective measures and can fund the repair, restoration, reconstruction or replacement of public infrastructure such as roads and bridges, water control facilities, public buildings and contents, public utilities and parks and other recreational facility facilities damaged during a disaster.

The Federal share of assistance is not less than 75 percent of the eligible cost for emergency measures and permanent restoration. The grantee (usually the State) determines how the non-Federal share (up to 25 percent) is split with the subgrantees (eligible applicants). Applicants in Natchitoches Parish will have 30 days from the date of the designation to submit Requests for Public Assistance (RPA). The deadline for submitting an RPA has been extended to Dec. 22, 2006 for the 16 parishes already designated for Public Assistance.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident, initiates mitigation activities and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA works closely with state and local emergency managers, law enforcement personnel, firefighters and other first responders. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
