WICHITA, Kan. –- Disaster assistance in the form of grants and loans adds up to more than $10 million for Kansas.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved more than $1.6 million in Individual Assistance, and The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved more than $8.3 million in disaster loans to Kansas residents and business owners to repair or replace their homes, personal property and businesses damaged by severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding that occurred May 4 through 18 in the 17 counties declared for Individual Assistance.

FEMA to date has approved more than $244,893 (federal share) in Public Assistance grants. These disaster grants are available for emergency work and permanent repairs to infrastructure damaged by the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding in 14 designated counties. Under the cost-share program, FEMA funds 75 percent of the cost for eligible work by state and local governments and certain nonprofit organizations that provide public services. The state manages the grants for all projects. The remaining 25 percent non-federal share comes from state and local sources.

As of today, 24 counties are eligible for federal disaster assistance under the declaration.

To date, more than 1,000 applicants affected by the severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding declaration have registered for federal and state disaster assistance.

Recovery officials from FEMA and the Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) urge all homeowners, renters and business owners who sustained damage from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 4 through 18 to apply to FEMA for assistance as soon as possible.
