Parsons, KS -- People who live or work in Crawford, Labette and Neosho counties and who are unable to work because of the severe storms and tornadoes that hit the area April 19th and 20th, may be eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA).
For residents of the affected counties, the application period for DUA will close June 5, 2000. DUA is funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and administered by the Kansas Department of Human Resources (KDHR).
Residents affected should call the KDHR Unemployment Insurance Office at 1-800-292-6333 to determine eligibility. The DUA program may cover persons in various categories including unemployed self employed individuals, individuals who lost their jobs directly due to the disaster and individuals who are unable to reach their job.
Those applying for DUA should also register with FEMA for disaster assistance. Eligibility for assistance is determined on a case basis. If an individual suffered damages and losses from the severe storms and tornadoes on April 19th and 20th, that person may register with FEMA by calling 1-800-462-9029 (TTY 1-800-462-7585).
Those who have already registered may check the status of their application by calling the toll-free Helpline at 1-800-525-0321 (TTY 1-800-462-7585). The hours for teleregistration and the Helpline are 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
