Richmond, VA -- Federal and state programs, such as the Individuals and Households Program, can assist many of those in need by providing temporary help with alternative housing and/or financial assistance with other needs.

“We realize the anguish of those who have been displaced from their homes or lost personal property due to Hurricane Isabel,” said State Coordinating Officer Michael Cline. “Registering for disaster assistance is the first step to begin rebuilding your life.”

You may still register for assistance by calling the FEMA registration line 1- 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1- 800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired. You may call from 7 a.m. to midnight seven days a week until further notice. Each situation is unique, and every application is handled on a case-by-case basis.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
