SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Puerto Rico and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recovery officials announced that the Municipality of Ponce is now eligible for the Public Assistance program to help pay for emergency services and public facilities damaged by the September 21 - October 3 severe storms and flooding.

The Public Assistance program provides grants to reimburse Puerto Rico, municipal governments and certain private non-profit organizations to repair or replace damaged infrastructure, emergency measures and debris removal.  Municipal authorities and certain private nonprofit organizations in Ponce are now eligible for all categories of Public Assistance.

Under the cost-share program, FEMA Public Assistance funds 75 percent of the cost for eligible work by commonwealth and local governments and certain nonprofit organizations.  Puerto Rico manages the grants for all projects.

There are now a total of 25 municipalities eligible for Public Assistance. The designated municipalities are: Arroyo, Adjuntas, Cabo Rojo, Guánica, Guayama, Guayanilla, Gurabo, Humacao, Juncos, Lajas, Las Marías, Las Piedras, Maunabo, Naguabo, Patillas, Peñuelas, Ponce, Sabana Grande, San Germán, San Lorenzo, Santa Isabel, Utuado, Villalba, Yabucoa, and Yauco.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
