Photo of Blue RoofsThe Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assigned to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers the task of providing temporary roof covering for qualified homes damaged by Hurricane Gustav. In response, the Corps activated its Operation Blue Roof program.

The Blue Roof program offers homeowners in designated parishes temporary blue plastic roof sheeting installed on their homes damaged by the hurricane. The purpose of the plan is to minimize further damage until owners can make permanent repairs.

The temporary Blue Roofs are generally good for 30 days and are free to homeowners. FEMA will reimburse local governments for 75 percent of the costs of the program.

More than 13,400 right-of-entry (ROE) application forms have been received from homeowners and more than 8,700 temporary Blue Roofs have been installed in Louisiana. The deadline to submit an application for a Blue Roof is Oct. 2, 2008.

Residents of designated parishes can call a toll-free telephone number, 1-888-Roof-Blu (1-888-766-3258), to find the location of the Blue Roof Right of Entry collection sites in their parishes, where they can apply until Oct. 2.
