FEMA Approves $8.3 Million In Funds For North Forest Independent School District

Houston, TX -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that it has approved $8.3 million of federal funds for the North Forest Independent School District, pending compliance with program requirements.
The funds are to repair flood damage that occurred at North Forest's Forest Brook High School, East Houston Intermediate School, B. C. Elmore Middle School, and Lakewood Elementary School during Tropical Storm Allison in June, 2001. Floodwaters from Allison inundated the school buildings to a depth of between 3 inches and 5 feet.
FEMA provides 75 percent of the total repair cost of $11.2 million. Local sources fund the 25 percent non-federal share.
To date, FEMA has approved some $14.3 million in federal funds to repair flood damage at schools in the North Forest Independent School District.
"The federal funds approved for the North Forest Independent School District demonstrate the importance of education. FEMA is proud to be a part of this recovery effort," said Ron Castleman, FEMA Region VI Director.
The funds are made available under the FEMA Public Assistance program. The State of Texas administers the program. Under the program, eligible disaster-related costs are reimbursed to government and certain non-profit units providing essential government-like services in the area of emergency protective measures, debris removal and restoration of public facilities.
