Disaster Assistance Service Centers Closed For Presidents' Day

New York, NY -- The two New York City Disaster Assistance Service Centers (DASCs) serving applicants impacted by the World Trade Center (WTC) attack will be closed on Feb. 18, 2002, in honor of Presidents' Day, it was announced today by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The DASCs will resume operations on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

The centers, jointly operated by city, state and federal agencies, are located at 141 Worth St. and 51 Chambers St. in lower Manhattan. Regular hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the 141 Worth St. DASC, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the 51 Chambers St. location. Both centers are open Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Visitors to the DASCs can meet one-on-one with program representatives who will evaluate their individual needs, check on the status of their application or update their registration information. The DASCs are staffed by voluntary agencies such as the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and Safe Horizon, and governmental agencies including FEMA, the New York State Department of Labor and various New York City agencies. Applicants seeking initial or follow-up assistance from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) should visit the Worth St. facility.

FEMA's toll-free disaster registration and Helplines will remain open on Presidents' Day. People affected by the World Trade Center attack do not need to visit the DASCs in order to register for assistance with FEMA; they can apply by calling 1-800-462-9029 (TTY: 1-800-462-7585) any weekday, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., including Feb. 18.

The teleregistration process is the starting point for a wide range of federal, state and voluntary disaster assistance programs and services, including temporary housing and relocation; unemployment benefits; crisis counseling; low-interest loans for businesses, renters and home owners; legal services; mortgage and rental assistance; and more.

All operators have access to translation services, accommodating the many language communities in the New York metropolitan area.
