Eugene, OR -- Funding for the Fiscal Year 2002 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program has been increased to a total of $360 million, and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) is sponsoring a series of special workshops across the country to explain the new application process to interested fire department representatives. The first Oregon workshops are scheduled Thursday, February 7, 2002 at 3:30 p.m. and again at 7:00 p.m. at the Deschutes National Forest Headquarters 1645 Hwy 20 E, in Bend, Oregon.

The grant workshops are not prerequisite to receiving information on application procedures, and all fire departments are encouraged to check out the FEMA grant website: www.usfa.fema.gov/grants. This year's application process is primarily internet based, but paper applications will be accepted from fire departments without internet access.

Eligible activities continued from last year include Firefighting Equipment, Personal Protective Equipment, Training, Fire Prevention, Fitness and Wellness, and Vehicles. In addition, fire-based EMS has been added as eligible projects for 2002.
