Free Workshops On 2002 Firefighters Grant Program -- Experts Explain Grant Applications Process

Philadelphia, PA -- The Fiscal Year 2002 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is now funded at $360 million. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) is sponsoring a series of special workshops across the country to explain the new application process to interested fire department representatives. The Virginia workshops are scheduled Saturday, February 16 in Dublin at the New River Community College, 5251 College Drive starting at 9 a.m. and Saturday February 23 in Virginia Beach at the Double Tree Hotel, 1900 Pavilion Drive (Pavilion Center), starting at 1 p.m. A second session at the Double Tree will start at 3 p.m.

The grant workshops are not prerequisite to receiving information on application procedures, and all fire departments are encouraged to check out the FEMA grant website: http://www.usfa.fema.gov/grants This year's application process is primarily internet based, but paper applications will be accepted from fire departments without internet access.

Eligible activities continued from last year include Firefighting Equipment, Personal Protective Equipment, Training, Fire Prevention, Fitness and Wellness, and Vehicles. In addition, fire-based EMS has been added as eligible projects for 2002.
