RALEIGH, N.C. -- The total of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA), and state funds committed for the North Carolina recovery effort from Hurricanes Floyd and Irene this week surpassed $1 billion.

With the deadline for registering for recovery assistance rapidly approaching, registrations for assistance in the 66 counties declared as disaster areas by the President in the aftermath of the 1999 storms reached 83,369. The deadline to get on the rolls for recovery help is next Thursday, February 17.

Anyone who suffered real or potential damages or losses in those storms is urged to call now to the FEMA recovery Hotline at 1-800-462-9029 or, for the speech or hearing impaired, TTY 1-800-462-7585. Registration will be accepted until 6 p.m. on February 17.

"We don't want anyone who suffered through Hurricanes Floyd and Irene to be denied the opportunity for assistance to help them along the road to recovery," said Carlos Mitchell, federal coordinating officer. "We hope that anyone who hasn't already done so will call and get registered now, today."
