Washington, DC -- FEMA Director James Lee Witt honored dozens of agency employees for their outstanding service in a ceremony held February 25. He praised their efforts on behalf of disaster victims and thanked them for helping to make FEMA a model federal agency.

In his speech, he also challenged his staff to look ahead, to helping achieve new goals for FEMA.

"Today I will challenge you to take more responsibility for FEMA's future-and to help Americans take more responsibility for their futures," he said.

He also challenged the staff to become even more customer oriented and for managers to be more employee-focused.

"The greatest privilege I've had-the highest honor I've enjoyed-has been working with each of you," Witt said. "There is no finer group of public servants-no finer group of people-than the team at FEMA."
