FEMA Voucher Program Underway in Chuuk; $6.6 Million in Assistance Approved

Dededo, Guam -- To facilitate typhoon recovery efforts for Federated States of Micronesia's (FSM) Chuuk citizens, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) began issuing emergency home repair vouchers on September 21. The vouchers will be exchanged for building materials and other supplies required to make the necessary essential repairs.
President Bush on July 11 signed the initial federal declaration for debris removal and emergency protective measures. Subsequently, an amendment adding assistance to individuals and expanded public assistance was signed on July 26. Currently, 8,477 citizens have registered for federal recovery assistance, officials said
The names of clients requested to report to the Distribution Center on a given day will be provided through radio and television announcements. Village mayors will be advised by radio, and a list of clients will be posted on the Weno Post Office wall. Only come to the center when your name is called. You will be notified of the hours of distribution.
The distribution center for the vouchers is at the Department of Public Affairs building located in Weno.
Once repairs are completed, FEMA will conduct random quality control inspections to verify that the recovery funds were used appropriately. FEMA will also respond to applicant questions and concerns, and investigate any reports of fraudulent misuse of vouchers or materials. In cases where the applicant has already started or completed home repairs, they should visit the Disaster Recovery Center at the RS Plaza.
Officials noted that the program could take up to four months to complete. A total of 8,477 people registered for disaster assistance, and over $6.6 million has already been approved for recovery efforts.
