Public Assistance Approved For Pohnpei

Dededo, Guam -- Public Assistance has been approved for Pohnpei State to help local governments recover from the effects of Tropical Storm Chata'an, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today. Damage to Pohnpei, one of the states in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), was caused by extremely high winds and surge.
FEMA Director Joe M. Allbaugh said Public Assistance was added to the disaster declaration issued on July 11 by President Bush, based upon initial damage assessments gathered by federal, FSM and Pohnpei officials.
Under the amendment, federal funding will pay 75 percent of the approved cost for debris removal, emergency services related to the disaster, and permanent restoration to public facilities damaged by the tropical storm. Funds also will be available for approved projects that reduce future disaster risks.
Due to severe crop losses from Chata'an, the amendment also approved the Municipality of Sapwuahfik eligible for the Emergency Food Program.
