BATON ROUGE, La. -- The following is a summary of some of the important information released during the week of Dec. 9 to Dec. 16, 2005, by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) from the Louisiana Joint Field Office for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

FLOOD INSURED VICTIMS MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR UP TO $30,000 IN ADDITIONAL AID

Homes and businesses which have been declared substantially damaged by their community from flood damages caused by Hurricane Katrina or Rita and who have flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) may be eligible for an additional $30,000 in Increased Cost of Compliance (ICC) funds to bring their home or business into compliance with floodplain ordinances.

FEMA GRANTS TEMPORARY ROOFING FOR HOMES IN ST. BERNARD PARISH

FEMA directed St. Bernard Parish residents with homes that have been structurally assessed as category “1” or “2” to apply at one of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Right of Entry (ROE) collection sites if they need a blue roof. To qualify, a resident must place the statement, “I intend to occupy the home within 30 days.” on the ROE form.

FEMA FUNDS DISASTER HOUSING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

Families who were previously HUD-assisted will be able to settle in areas, across the United States, that were not affected by the disaster through the FEMA-funded Katrina Disaster Housing Assistance program (KDHAP). FEMA will relocate families to the area of their choice. The families may return to their home state as housing is rebuilt or repaired.

PRIVATE PROPERTY DEBRIS REMOVAL BEGINS IN CAMERON PARISH

FEMA, in coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and local and state officials, has approved private property debris removal (PPDR) in Cameron Parish, starting in Johnson’s Bayou.

CRISIS COUNSELING ASSISTANCE TOPS $6.1 MILLION IN LOUISIANA

FEMA and the State of Louisiana will continue to offer free crisis counseling services for hurricane victims during the holidays. Referral services and short-term counseling are available by calling Baton Rouge Area Crisis Line at 225-924-3900.

SCHOOL STAFF IN JEFFERSON PARISH MOVES TO NEW FEMA TRAILER PARK

One-hundred staff members from Norbert Rillieux Elementary School are moving into 80 trailers in Waggaman, La. Superintendent Dr. Diane Roussel was determined to reopen schools as soon as possible.

COOPERATIVE EFFORT BRINGS POWER TO ORLEANS PARISH TRAVEL TRAILERS

FEMA, in cooperation with Entergy, initiated a program to get electricity to homeowners in Orleans Parish who received FEMA travel trailers for temporary housing. FEMA has agreed to pay contractors to extend power from the street to individual travel trailers.

COAST GUARD ASSISTS LOUISIANA IN VESSEL REMOVAL

FEMA is assisting the state of Louisiana with the removal, from navigable waterways, of commercial vessels wrecks and debris, that pose an immediate threat to public safety or the environment.

STOREFRONT FOR LONG-TERM RECOVERY TO OPEN IN VERMILION PARISH

The Long-Term Community Recovery Team opened a resource center at 102 N. Henry, Abbeville, La. for local citizens to participate in recovery efforts for Southwest Louisiana.

FEMA TEAM HOLDS “NEIGHBOR HELPING NEIGHBOR” WORKSHOP

FEMA’s Community Relations Field Specialist team held a “Neighbor Helping Neighbor” workshop to provide information to the community and to inform them on how important they are in the recovery and rebuilding of lives.

BACK TO BUSINESS WORKSHOP TO ASSIST SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA BUSINESSES

A Back to Business Workshop was held to provide the business community of Southwest Louisiana information and insight to help the restoration of the private sector. The workshop featured presentations about loans and disaster assistance grants, contracting opportunities, public safety, public health, insurance, and other regional issues.

FEMA ISSUES COMMUNITY DISASTER LOANS TO TWO LOUISIANA COMMUNITIES

FEMA disbursed $759,000 in Community Disaster Loans (CDL) to two Louisiana communities, the city of Mandeville and the town of Abita Springs.

BLUE ROOF WARRANTY LASTS 30 DAYS
(Release date: Dec. 15, 2005)

The free blue plastic sheeting installed on 78,700 hurricane-damaged roofs in Louisiana carries only a 30-day warranty, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

PROPANE SAFETY TIPS FOR USE IN TRAVEL TRAILERS, MOBILE HOMES

When used according to safety guidelines, propane poses a very low threat because it is a nontoxic, nonpoisonous fuel. If you should smell escaping gas, open the window or door, go outside and shut off the gas at the propane tank. Do not call 911 inside of the house, make sure everyone leaves.

LOUISIANA UNMET NEEDS COMMITTEES BRING HELP TO KATRINA SURVIVORS

Louisiana volunteers are organizing Unmet Needs Committees at the parish level and focus on individuals and families who have significant unmet needs after receiving the maximum allowed assistance from government disaster programs.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program.
