SEATTLE, Wash. – There’s no telling what the future holds. Winter storms and flooding, fierce winds, earthquakes and attendant tsunami threats– no matter what the New Year has in store, preparing ahead of time can mitigate 2006’s nastier surprises. Need a catalyst to convert good intentions into effective emergency plans? FEMA Regional Director John Pennington offers suggestions!

“The Pacific Northwest is beautiful—but as we all know, it is also prone to serious natural hazards and unfortunately, as we move further into the 21st century, terrorism remains a relevant threat,” said Pennington. “The same disaster response capabilities that help protect communities from earthquakes and floods go a long way towards blunting acts of terror.”

Prudent, positive steps that could make for a safer and more secure 2006 include:

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program.
