AUSTIN, Texas -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded a total of $14.34 million in Public Assistance (PA) grants to the State of Texas to reimburse Tyler County for costs of removing debris stemming from Hurricane Rita.

The grant covers two separate allocations of $9.49 million and $4.85 million for removal, disposal and reduction of debris on public property. As of Dec. 7, some 512,496 cubic yards of debris have been removed in Tyler County. The State of Texas administers FEMA’s PA program, under which eligible and documented disaster-related costs are reimbursed to state and local governments.

"Debris cleanup is the first step in recovery," said Federal Coordinating Officer Sandy Coachman, FEMA’s top official for disaster recovery operations in Texas. "We're pleased to make this award."

"Tyler County was hit hard in this disaster," said State Coordinating Officer Frank Cantu of the Texas Governor’s Division of Emergency Management (GDEM). "These funds will be welcome in the region."
