ORLANDO, Fla. -- Florida’s State Emergency Response Team (SERT) has employed a combined State and Federal effort to distribute much-needed items to the areas affected by Hurricane Charley. State and Federal personnel from the Division of Emergency Management, Florida Division of Forestry, Department of Military Affairs, Florida National Guard, Federal Emergency Management Agency, US Forest Service, Army Corps of Engineers, Government Services Administration, and other county and local agencies are working around the clock to distribute these items to people in need.

More than 1,566 trucks filled with ice, water, generators, blankets, sleeping bags and other items have been distributed from the Lakeland Logistics Staging Area (LSA) to affected areas since Saturday, August 14, in addition to relief items that are sent directly from other FEMA and state LSA’s. The following lists the amount of each item that has been sent for relief efforts since the start of the LSA operation.

The State Emergency Response Team is a collaboration of Florida’s emergency management agencies led by the state coordinating officer. SERT’S mission is to ensure that Florida is prepared to respond to emergencies, recover from them, and mitigate their impact. On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
